Squeeze more life out of your battery

2010-06-29 12:27:00

Long-life batteries from Dell and HP can keep laptops running for as many as 20 hours at a stretch. But you don't need a powerful external battery to get more use out of your current battery. There are several things you can do now to extract precious additional minutes from the basic six-cell battery found in most laptops Toshiba PA3291U-1BAS.

Adjust only a few factors and you'll derive most of the available power savings. The biggest consumers of battery power are the screen, the processor, the optical drive, and the disk. Of these, the screen is by far the most important. It's also the easiest to adjust. Lower the brightness of the screen to the lowest level at which you can comfortably work and you'll have done more to save battery life than any other tweak can deliver.

[ Twenty hours on a single charge? Read about InfoWorld's test and download our InfoCountdown benchmark to measure your own laptop's battery life. ]

The processor is frequently beyond your immediate control -- you've got to get the work done. However, eliminating background tasks such as listening to music or streaming video will lighten the processor's load. Similarly, keeping Wi-Fi use to a minimum can buy you significant time. When you have a choice, plugging in a network cable is much Toshiba PA3291U-1BRS easier on your battery than wireless networking.

Optical drives are largely used for optional activities, such as watching DVDs, listening to CDs, or ripping music. These are all power-hungry uses. Since most of them can be postponed with little downside, avoid using the optical drive until you can plug in to a power source.

One component that does not Satellite P20 Series battery consume much power is the hard disk. In fact, the widely accepted view that SSDs (solid-state drives) provide important power savings over mechanical drives is simply wrong. The power savings delivered by SSDs when compared with hard drives is minimal to nonexistent. Per various hardware vendors, an SSD adds only about 10 minutes of useful life to a battery charge. This fact shows just how far hard-disk technology has advanced: Despite relying on many moving parts, its power consumption runs even with a solid-state device Satellite P25 Series battery. SSDs should be bought either to ruggedize a system or for performance benefits, but not for energy savings.

Some of these adjustments Toshiba PA3382U-1BAS can be automated by using the power-consumption profiles that are set up by the various operating systems or hardware-vendor Toshiba PA3382U-1BRS utilities. Many users choose one profile they feel suits them and never change it. However, changing profiles is easy to do and will conserve battery life. So Satellite A60 Series battery if you know your current workload will stretch your battery's capacity, switch to a lighter, economy profile. And then switch back to your regular profile once you're fully charged.

Toggling power profiles will keep you from having to configure several Satellite A65 Series battery components to stretch your battery life. Or simpler yet, consider one of today's long-life batteries.

STMicroelectronics Drive to Improve Battery Technologies for Hybrid El

2010-03-20 04:07:00

STMicroelectronics and LG, have unveiled details of a new automotive battery pack that significantly extends the potential of electric and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), reducing both petrol consumption and CO2 emissions. Olympus LI-42B The new battery pack combines LG Chem’s lithium ion (Li-ion) battery technology and with a state-of-the-art battery management chip manufactured by ST.

Hybrid electric vehicles, which combine a conventional petrol-fueled Internal Combustion Engine with an electric-motor Olympus LI-40B powered by a rechargeable battery, are becoming an increasingly important part of the automotive market because they can deliver greater fuel efficiency and reduce atmospheric Sony NP-F330 pollution. Typically, today’s HEVs use batteries based on Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) technology, which use simpler control circuits Sony NP-F530 but are heavier and operate at lower voltages.

Li-ion batteries are widely used in portable consumer electronic equipment because they offer one of the best energy-to-weight Sony NP-F550 ratios - more than twice that of NiMH batteries - with a very low self-discharge while not in use. However, their use in higher power applications has so far been limited because the charge/discharge cycle of Li-ion batteries must be carefully managed to protect the batteries from abuse condition. For this reason, Li-ion batteries Sony NP-F730 must be combined with sophisticated and highly reliable electronic battery-management circuits in high-power applications.

The new Li-ion battery pack from LG Sony NP-F570 Chem manages the charge/discharge cycle by incorporating an advanced battery-management chip, manufactured by ST, which enables safe and long-term reliability of Li-ion battery technology at affordable cost, even in applications as demanding Sony NP-F750 a s automotive powertrain systems.

ST’s battery-management chip is manufactured with the Company’s proprietary BCD (Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS) technology, which combines digital logic circuits, precise analog measurement circuits and power-handling transistors in one silicon chip. A Battery Management System with these Sanyo DB-L20 Battery chips accurately controls the charging and discharging cycles of the battery to ensure safe operation and long battery life. Each chip can handle up to ten Li-ion cells Canon NB-2L Battery and also includes an interface for communicating with other ST battery-management chips in a system. With this communication capability, as many as 32 battery-management chips can be connected in cascade to manage batteries that deliver up to 1600V to the electric motors.

BCD, often called smart power, is a Olympus LI-12B battery semiconductor technology that allows ST to manufacture three fundamental components of electronic circuits on a single low-cost chip – digital logic for high-speed computation, analog circuits for high-precision measurement and control, and power transistors Fujifilm NP-40 Battery that manage the flow of high electric currents. ST pioneered the technology and has led the market ever since, with its smart-power products used in high volume applications ranging from printers and fax machines Canon BP-511 Battery to hard disk drives and the devices that manage the movement of windows and mirrors in cars. The LG Chem/ST solution reduces the cost and weight and increases the reliability of the Li-ion battery pack, enabling Li-ion technology to address new applications from electric scooters and bicycles to heavy trucks.

Polyplus Develops Lithium Metal Batteries for Underwater Use

2010-03-19 04:50:00

Emerging technologies imply the possibility of printable human organs in the future, so perhaps the prospect of having printable batteries isn't as unlikely as some people might think. In the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Electronic Nano Systems (ENAS), Dr. Reinhard Baumann and his colleagues developed a battery technology that could be printed and would cost very little to manufacture. "Our goal is to be able to mass produce the batteries at a price of single Panasonic CGA-S006 battery digit cent range each," the group's manager says. Making the battery requires the use of a silk-screen printing method, similar to the process used for t-shirts and banners.

The printable battery will understandably be thin and flat, with a depth of less than a millimeter and a weight that's less than a gram. These batteries will be free of mercury and other toxic metals and will be Panasonic CGA-S006E composed of layers of zinc anode and manganese cathode that react with each other to produce electricity. Each piece will have a voltage of 1.5 V; higher voltages (3 V, 4.5 V and 6 V) could be achieved by forming a row of printed batteries. Unfortunately, the zinc and the manganese undergo degradation over time, so based on current prototype the battery could be best used for devices with a limited lifespan. Already gone New Panasonic CGA-S006 Lithium Ion digital camera battery past the theory stage, the printable battery was already produced in a laboratory scale, with year-end product announcements expected.

Based in Berkeley, California, Polyplus is a battery company currently working on emerging lithium batteries for market Panasonic CGA-S006 battery pack release in the future. Polyplus was commissioned by an unnamed government organization to make single-use lithium-air batteries, with the intention of releasing it to the public hopefully within a few years' time. Rechargeable type lithium air batteries are also currently in development.

The difference between conventional lithium-ion Sony NP-F330 Battery pack and lithium-air batteries is that the latter doesn't contain graphite electrodes, relying instead on the lithium to act as the anode and ambient air as the cathode. A big problem that concerns developers of the technology is that this type of battery doesn't mix well with water, even reacting violently with it. Water, as vapor, is of course constantly present in air. But PolyPlus isn't just working Canon BP-511 Battery to solve the lithium-air batteries' problem with water in air; the company is actually working on a waterproof battery that can work underwater.

Polyplus' waterproof lithium seawater battery employs the use of two centimeters squared and three millimeters thick lithium component Samsung sb-lsm80 Battery . It can apparently carry a charge close to conventional lithium-ion batteries for laptops except it tips the scale at just one-fifth Sharp BT-L11 Battery the weight. Best of all, the new batteries can be manufactured using the machineries for conventional lithium-ion, so production costs could be minimal. There are still concerns the company has to face such as growth of seawater microorganisms on the battery when used in the ocean. If it passes tests for practical usage though (and it seems to be doing quite well), the battery could be used not only for everyday applications, but for underwater applications as well.

Sony Outs New Li-ION Battery with Four Times Longer Lifespan

2010-03-18 23:13:00

New battery technologies are being developed left and right in a quest to find the most efficient portable source of energy. One such effort is Sony's newest lithium ion secondary battery introduced recently that uses an olivine-type lithium iron phosphate for the cathode. This new battery can reportedly be charged New Canon NB-2L Lithium Ion digital camera battery to 99 percent of its full capacity in just 30 minutes which appears to be half the charge time of Sony's current fastest-charging batteries that use cobalt-based material for its cathode.

According to Nikkei, olivine is suitable Canon NB-2L battery pack as a battery cathode because of its robust crystal structure and its ability to remain stable even when operating in high temperatures (thus, making it suitable for power motor-driven machines). To achieve a power density of 1800W/kg and a high degree of stability, Sony utilized its proprietary particle design technology to minimize electrical resistance, as well as its cell structure design Canon NB-2L battery technology. Olivine's crystal structure allows the battery to last four times longer than current secondary lithium-ion batteries when used to power electronic devices, Sony claims. Plans of commercialization and an official launch date are yet to be announced.

Consumers of rechargeable AA batteries now have a new type to contend with, as PowerGenix makes its debut with its self-branded NiZN batteries—to be sold in Amazon.com, GreenBatteries, and EcoDepot.com. PowerGenix is a company known for manufacturing non-toxic nickel-zinc batteries which, as of last year, passed RoHS requirements. While this is the first time we're seeing PowerGenix-branded AA rechargeable NiZn batteries, the company sold Canon NB-2LH battery through Ritz Camera suppliers under the name Quantaray Super Z Zinc back in late 2008. According to GreenTech Media, Ritz is currently undergoing reorganization so PowerGenix's release couldn't be made at a more opportune time.

PowerGenix claims that the nickel-zinc technology puts rechargeable batteries on par with single-use batteries in regards Sony NP-F330 battery pack to power. There's apparently a 30 percent increase in power delivery compared to other rechargeable battery technologies. Since gadgets are made to work in optimal conditions with single-use batteries, this feature can only be favorable. "With the first true replacement for disposable battery technology, PowerGenix is focused on offering a better battery alternative and expanding rechargeables share of the $5.2 billion global consumer market," says company CEO Dan Squiller. The PowerGenix rechargeable AA NiZn batteries sell for $34.99 per pack of four with a charger New Sony NP-F330 Lithium Ion camcorder battery and $14.99 for a pack of four without. It seems the company would be working on AAA batteries next time, as a cell phone manufacturer has approached them to work on developing the type.

If it can be powered by Sony NP-FH50 Battery , expect Sanyo to add it to its eneloop product line. After a long line of products that includes a bicycle, lighting and an assortment of hand and lap warmers, Sanyo is adding a portable solar generator and a neck warmer to the list.

The generator (pictured left) uses Sanyo's HIT solar cells Olympus LI-12B battery - one version with a single panel, and another with two (called "twin panels") for faster charging. A simple mesh bag houses the charger, with its back big enough to carry various gadgets. An accessory for the charger called eneloop mobile booster allows the user to charge the internal lithium-ion battery via USB port Sanyo DB-L20 Battery . The eneloop twin panel charger can power a cell phone for 40 minutes after an hour under the sun; the single panel charger can power a phone for 20 minutes for the same amount of charging time.

The eneloop neck warmer (pictured after the jump) on the other hand, is a snug wrap for the neck with a section containing Fujifilm NP-40 Battery a sheet heater made out of carbon and a special type of resin. Its temperature is self-regulated to prevent cases of burning the user Canon BP-511 Battery . Besides these two new products though, Sanyo also launched revamped 2009 versions of the Kairo hand warmer and the eneloop soft warmer. The hand warmer now has more colors available, while the lap warmer was redesigned to have a larger outer cover, an integrated heater on the outer cover, a fastening belt and a new herringbone pattern.
